Our checklist to help you make the move to Malta
Our checklist to help you make the move to Malta. Our highly experienced team at Perry Estate Agents Malta have compiled a comprehensive checklist that will help you make the move to Malta. Have a look at our key points to remember below…
1.
What Is the Global Residence Programme?
The Global Residence Programme is designed for eligible individuals who are not nationals of the EU, EEA or Switzerland and who wish to establish their principal residence in Malta.
One of the main attractions is the potential to benefit from a 15% tax rate on qualifying foreign-source income received in Malta, subject to the programme's conditions and a minimum annual tax payment.
A qualifying residential property in Malta or Gozo is also an important requirement of the programme, making the choice of property a key consideration for prospective applicants.

1. Investigate
It’s important to do your research before moving and make sure that you fully understand the laws and regulations in Malta, as these can differ from those of your home country. If necessary, contact the Maltese Embassy or visit their website at www.foreign.gov.mt.
2. Paperwork
Make sure you submit any passport, visa or permit applications early, as these can take time to process both at home and in Malta. Also, check the expiration dates of passports, as this is easy to overlook.
3. Important Documents
Gather all your important documents and keep them ready for your move. You will need them at various stages when dealing with the Maltese authorities. These may include:
- Proof of residency at home, such as utility bills, credit card statements and bank statements
- Tax and employment documents
- Marriage certificate
- Birth certificate
- Citizenship or naturalisation documents
- Insurance policies
- Investment plans
- Medical and dental records
- Veterinary records for pets
- Copies of any wills
- Academic certificates
4. International Shipping and Removal Companies
Get quotes from several international shipping companies offering land and sea transport, as prices can vary. Bear in mind that it can sometimes be cheaper to book a shipping container exclusively for your belongings, including space for a small car if you’re bringing one.
Label boxes clearly so you know exactly what is in them when they arrive. Shipping can take up to a month, so make sure you have enough essentials with you until your belongings arrive.
5. Home Insurance
Research Maltese insurance companies to get an idea of prices and make a list of your requirements.
6. Car Insurance
Make sure you have car insurance in place, particularly if you are importing your car to Malta, as you will need it when collecting your vehicle.
It is common in Malta to insure your vehicle fully comprehensively, as driving can be hazardous. You should also consider puncture cover, as potholes can cause punctures. With suitable cover, a mechanic can come to your assistance 24 hours a day and get you back on the road.
7. Property Insurance
It may be worth considering international property insurance. This can cover your possessions while they are in transit and after they have been moved into your Maltese residence.
Some insurers specialise in services for expats, so research your options before you arrive.
8. Medication
Make sure you have enough of any medication required by you or a family member. Keep it in your hand luggage rather than packing it with your other belongings, where it could be lost during the move.
You should also keep any relevant medical records for future reference.
9. Health Insurance
First, check whether you and your family are eligible to use Malta’s public healthcare system. EU, EEA and Swiss nationals may have access, subject to their individual circumstances and status. Non-EU and non-EEA nationals may need private health insurance.
Some policies offer worldwide protection, so explore all the available options before arriving.
10. Bank and Credit Card Accounts
Notify your banks and credit card providers of your relocation. International online banking facilities can make the transition easier, particularly when managing accounts and making transfers.
If you own a property at home and intend to rent it out, it may be worth setting up a separate bank account for the property. Having all related income and expenses in one account will make it easier to manage and audit.
11. International Driving Permit
Check that your current driving licence is valid and not about to expire. Keep it with your essential documents in your hand luggage.
If you need to renew it or apply for an International Driving Permit, allow plenty of time for your application to be processed.
12. Tax Status
Speak to a financial adviser who understands Maltese tax laws and discuss your proposed tax status, particularly in relation to any income earned abroad.
Allow plenty of time to gather the relevant paperwork and complete any necessary applications.
13. Pets
If you are planning to bring pets with you, specialist companies can help you complete the necessary paperwork and minimise stress for your animals.
Bear in mind that additional handling charges may apply when collecting a pet from the airport in Malta.
14. Flight and Hotel Reservations
Book flights and hotel accommodation early to ensure availability and secure the best possible prices.
15. Video calls & WhatsApp
Get connected and make sure your family and friends are too. It will help on the days when you’re missing home!
16. Forwarding Mail and Cancelling Subscriptions
Cancel any subscriptions you no longer need and arrange for your mail to be forwarded to your new address by completing the relevant forms at the Post Office.
17. Culture
Familiarise yourself with some local phrases and key words before arriving, as well as Malta’s culture and traditions. Be prepared for island life to sometimes move at a slower pace than you may be used to at home.
